SEO for 5–50 person companies: where to actually start

You run a company with somewhere between 5 and 50 people. There's no SEO team, no content department, and whoever "does the website" also does five other jobs. Meanwhile every SEO guide online seems written for enterprises with dedicated teams and six-figure budgets.

Here's the good news: small companies don't need enterprise SEO. They need a short list, in the right order. This is the exact prioritization framework we'd hand a lean team starting from zero.

Step 1 — Remove the blockers first

Before you write a single word of new content, make sure Google can actually use your site. Technical blockers silently cancel out everything else you do. Run through the essentials:

  • Can Google reach your pages? Check for accidental noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, and pages buried with no internal links.
  • Is the site on HTTPS with a valid certificate and no mixed-content warnings?
  • Does it work on mobile? Most of your visitors are on phones. If buttons are un-tappable or text requires pinching, fix that before anything else.
  • Is it reasonably fast? You don't need a perfect speed score — but pages that take an age to load bleed visitors and rankings.
  • Is Search Console set up? It's free, it tells you what Google sees, and it flags problems automatically. If you do nothing else, do this.

None of this is glamorous. All of it is load-bearing.

Step 2 — Pick your ~10 money keywords

Not 200 keywords. Ten. The phrases a ready-to-buy customer actually types — usually some mix of what you sell plus where you sell it, or the specific problem you solve.

For each candidate, ask three questions: Is it relevant to something we sell? Does it show buying intent (compare "accounting software pricing" versus "what is accounting")? And is it realistic — can a site your size actually outrank what's currently there? Long-tail, specific phrases are almost always the right starting point for smaller sites.

Step 3 — Build one strong page per keyword cluster

Each of those keyword groups gets one page — and that page needs to be the best answer to the searcher's question, not just "present". Match the intent: if people searching the phrase want to compare options, give them a comparison. If they want a price, don't hide it three clicks deep.

Depth beats volume here. One genuinely useful page per cluster will outperform ten thin ones every time, and it's far less work to maintain.

Step 4 — Link your own pages together

Internal linking is the most underrated move in small-business SEO. It costs nothing, takes an afternoon, and tells Google which of your pages matter most. Link from your homepage and high-traffic pages to the money pages from Step 3, using descriptive anchor text. Fix any orphan pages — content with zero internal links pointing at it is practically invisible.

Step 5 — Measure only what matters

Track your ~10 keywords and the conversions they drive. That's the dashboard. Ignore everything else for now — ranking reports with 500 keywords are a distraction when you only care about ten.

Three mistakes that waste small teams' time

  • Blogging with no keyword plan. Publishing "5 tips" posts that target nothing is content theatre. Every piece should map to a keyword someone actually searches.
  • Ignoring the technical foundations. Writing content on a site Google can't crawl properly is like printing brochures for a shop with no door.
  • Chasing vanity traffic. Ranking #1 for a phrase that brings zero buyers is a party trick, not a strategy. Traffic that doesn't convert is just a hosting bill.

Do these five steps in order and you'll be ahead of most companies your size. SEO rewards the consistent and the focused — both things small teams are naturally good at.
